Saturday Girl About Town is an ongoing project by award winning photographer Casey Orr. Since 2014 the project has looked at how young people use the high street – it is a celebration of their sense of fashion, individuality and identity. Relaunching the project after the pandemic, Casey is now asking what the high street can mean to young people today, with the departure of so many national chains and increasing number of independent shops, whilst charity shops are increasingly offering opportunities for creativity, thrift and environmental responsibility – an antidote to fast fashion.
Casey has created an exciting new series of photographic portraits specifically for Redcar Palace, taken over two different photo shoots in 2021. The Redcar portraits will join others currently being photographed in Wigan, Barnsley, Chester and Blackpool and feature in a 10 year celebration of the project at Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery in 2024.
Saturday Girl about town has been developed with Open Eye Gallery and produced by James Lawler with design and branding by Jennifer Skip. For the Redcar Palace a new window painting has been created by Sarah Jarman. The exhibition has been led on behalf of Redcar Palace by Beth Smith and Millie Thomas has printed the portraits and provided additional design. Redcar Palace is hugely grateful to Casey Orr for developing this joyous body of work and in particular to all the people who have agreed to be photographer for being such fantastic Saturday Girls.
Saturday Girl About Town will be displayed at Redcar Palace until the 19th of June.
