Opening Saturday 3rd February 2024
We are delighted to be starting 2024 at Redcar Palace with a series of thought provoking exhibitions that deal with aspects of bringing about positive change through art and crafting.
Our first show Swords into Ploughshares, Knives into Jewels is a touring exhibition curated by Norman Cherry and Dauvit Alexander from Birmingham School of Jewellery. They have worked with 34 of the leading jewellery artists from around the world to reuse and repurpose knives into jewellery, in so doing removing them from circulation on the streets. Our presentation of this work at Redcar Palace represents the only opportunity for audiences to see this exhibition in the North East. Alongside this exhibition we will be promoting a range of other projects that have used crafting for social change.
Also featuring a new body of photographic portraits by Kev Howard which celebrate the region’s creative community.
Alongside this exhibition we will showcase a new commission by Lizzie Lovejoy, “Portrait of a Wellness Worker” exploring the relationship between crafting and wellbeing.
Swords into Ploughshares, Knives into Jewels opens on Saturday 3rd February with refreshments served between 12pm and 3pm and continues until 27th April.
Norman and Dauvit will be giving a guided tour of the exhibition and, as usual, all will be welcome.
Redcar Palace is also helping to deliver workshops with charity Red Balloons and artist Laura Mohapi as part of her ongoing project ‘We The Human: A Quiet Blue Wall’, which is a ‘global project, a people project, a human project, designed and developed by an artist from the community of the neurodiverse at risk of suicidal ideation and attempted suicide’.
The outcome of these workshops will be exhibited between 13th February and 18th February 2024.
